MuRukariKing’s Palace in Rukari is located in Nyanza district in southern Rwanda. It was home to King Mutara III Rudahigwa recognized among national heroes under Imena category. Such a category of heroes is actually the second among the three categories of Rwanda national heroes. Imena hero must be reputed for extraordinary acts for the country which are characterized by the supreme sacrifice, high importance and example.
When he succeeded his father, King Yuhi V Musinga overthrown and sent into exile in 1931, Rudahigwa ruled Rwanda in a difficult period. He collaborated with the colonial administration and the Church nevertheless. But at the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s he divorced them as he realized that his interests and theirs diverged too much. For him, development and independence of Rwanda were urgent whilst the colonial administration wanted to keep the domination over the country for years. On July 25th, 1959 suddenly Rudahigwa died in Bujumbura, a death probably due to his disapproval of the colonial system. Today he is one of the model heroes who loved their country and his action inspires Rwandans to fight for a total independency. Please click here for more information on Rwanda National Heroes
