Beer Production – Since time immemorial, Rwandans produce and drink a variety of beers, inzoga. Some are based on banana; others are based on grains or honey. Banana beer urwagwa, now found throughout the country was rarely drunk in certain regions. Sorghum beer amarwa or ikigage was more popular. Eleusine beer amarwa y’uburo was also drunk. Sometimes beers were fermented of two main ingredients – banana and sorghum intimbure, for example. When prepared with honey, these drinks were preferred: banana beer and honey, inkangaza, sorghum beer and honey inturire; mead (malt, yeast, and honey) inzoga y’ubuki.
